The Real Story Behind GS Appliance: A Journey of Growth and Community
Sometimes, you don’t realise how far you’ve come until someone else points it out. This week, after finishing a job, a customer stopped me before I left and asked about my journey and how GS Appliance actually started. He’d noticed how long we’ve been trading locally and wanted to know the story behind the business. By the time I got back into the van, his kind words genuinely made me stop and think. So, I wanted to share it properly.
How It Really Started
Over ten years ago, GS Appliance didn’t start with a fleet of vans, a team, or even a proper setup. I didn’t even have my own van. For the first few months, I used my partner’s car just to get to jobs. Back then, it was just me. I had very little equipment and an even smaller understanding of how to run a business.
What I did have, though, was one very simple rule: Don’t give up. I had no real backup plan. No safety net. I put my head down and committed fully to building something from nothing. There was no looking back.
The Part People Don’t See
Running a business takes far more than just fixing appliances. There have been many moments over the years where I’ve genuinely thought about giving up. The pressure, the responsibility, and the impact on personal and family life can be huge. When you’re self-employed and trying to grow, it doesn’t switch off when the working day ends. It follows you home.
But you keep going – because you believe in what you’re building.
A Moment That Really Hit Home
When the customer told me how inspiring it was to hear how the business had grown from nothing, it made me reflect on something I don’t often stop to think about. Since starting GS Appliance, we’ve now completed over 23,000 appliance repairs locally. Saying that out loud still feels surreal. That’s 23,000 households that trusted us to come into their homes and help when something went wrong.
Still a Family Business – Just a Bigger One
GS Appliance is, and always has been, a family-run business. My partner Hannah has been part of the business for over six to seven years and plays a huge role behind the scenes. Both of my sisters now work in the office, supporting the day-to-day running of the company and helping keep everything moving.
Alongside that, we’ve built a strong, reliable team of local technicians who genuinely care about the quality of their work and the service we provide. I’m incredibly proud of the team we now have.
